Entry Level Exit 

Money never loves what we do for it. 
A gray handshake assures us we’ll hear 
 
something by Monday. My thumb is blue  
from circling want-ads. The elevator drops us 
 
from the spectacular view.  
 
A cousin of Elvin Bishop’s bass player leads me across the parking lot 
 
to the Milwaukee River. I wade in  
hoping a fish, or a frog, 
 
will brother me, 
but I am left, 
 
wet, with people.
