The Rings of Saturn

I gaze at the sky.
I see darkness closing
like a lizard’s eye.
The earth shrinks in my mind
to the size of a pea,
and I drift into outer space,
looking for something
I know as grace.
But what I see is the moon
with an indifferent face.
Life is imagination,
and grace is a creation
of the human race.
I’ll continue to greet friends
with cordiality, until I
finally descend in confusion
to a more cordial place,
but still searching
for that elusive grace.
